Notes from Meetings May 14 and telephone meetings

Models and Design Patterns Committee Purpose:

• Draft – The purpose of the Models and Design Patterns Committee is to identify content management models and design patterns that may be situationally appropriate, so that CM professionals can obtain knowledge and experience specific to their circumstances, and vendors and consultants can target broadly-applicable use cases.

• Enumeration of different Model and Pattern types (e.g. maturity model vs. complexity models), and what a formal statement would look like in those two areas.
• Process for setting priorities (see next bullet) -- Bob B's approach sounds good.
• Prioritized list of high value areas that would benefit from modeling and patterns. e.g. Webpages as formal records in regulated vs. unregulated industries; static vs. dynamic vs. hybrid pattern for web content delivery; content re-use vs. repurposing models, editorial models, etc.
• A development process – identification, analysis, conclusions, ratification, publication, communication.
  • Use RFCs (Request for Comments) following W3C style?
• Ongoing review.

Tony Byrne asked that we research possible formats for CMS Consultants design patterns. There is a great deal of design pattern work in the object-oriented software field and in user interface and interaction design. Can their formats - and especially their terminology - be adapted for use in CMS Consultants patterns?

We looked in several print and web references on Design Patterns.

A Pattern Language, Christopher Alexander.
Design Patterns, Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson, and John Vlissides (The Gang of Four).
Design Patterns Explained, Alan Shalloway and James Trott.
Reengineering Patterns, Steve Demeyer.
Common Ground, Jenifer Tidwell.
Web Design Patterns, Martijn Welie.
